Snow day playlist

Real talk: Boston has already received a record setting 76.5 inches of snow over the past few weeks and more snow is on the horizon.

Since the MBTA isn't running today, and I'm holed up in my apartment for the second day in a row, I figured a snow day playlist is in order. Because even if you are working from home today, being home means you can play music as loud as you want!

Enjoy!

Practical gifting

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, many of us (myself included!) are scrambling to buy the perfect last minute gift for our significant other. But what do you buy for the person who has it all?

Traditional wisdom suggests that you find something slightly quirky, DIY, or off the beaten path (If that's what you are looking for, this guide from Brit + Co is probably the best of the bunch: http://www.brit.co/valentines-day-gifts-for-guys/. My guy LOVES the PDT cocktail book).

However, from my experience, those are the types of gifts that get shoved in a drawer and forgotten about forever (and if you aren't a DIYer, don't bother trying to DIY). People are much more appreciative of gifts that they will actually use!

So, I present to you... A practical guide to gifting:

1. Gift an experience to share together.

Classes and experiences are my absolute favorite type of gift to give. The Boston Center for Adult Education offers some wonderful cooking classes with guest chefs from restaurants in the area. In July, the boy and I celebrated his birthday with a steak cooking class hosted by the executive chef at Smith & Wollensky. It was awesome.

BCAE offers "early bird" pricing when new classes are released (30% off) and other promos sporadically (up to 50% off!), so make sure you get on the email list!

My man getting his chef on.

P.S. Check out the awesome dishes we cooked at our class on the Smith & Wollensky website (recipes included)! Cajun marinated ribeye (here), creamy corn with manchego (here), and seared scallops (here)!

If you're not in Boston, another source for cooking classes with a wider audience base is Sur La Table. Other options that go over well include tickets to a concert, show, or sports event, and trial memberships for new gyms or studio classes (e.g. the Boston ClassPass trial membership).

2. Gift a luxury he wouldn't buy for himself.

Top examples here include technology (e.g. an iPad, a Roku player), cooking implements (we love our Wusthof Classic steak knives), and clothes (this year, my SO is getting his first pair of Lululemon sweatpants. Shh... don't tell him! He doesn't read the blog.). Luxury socks also might be a good bet (I haven't used them yet, so I don't know for sure!).

Roku player turns your TV into a smart TV.
Reasonably priced and great for Netflix streaming!

3. Give a gift that supports a favorite sport or hobby.

This works well for any gift-giving holiday! If he plays tennis, get him new tennis shoes,
or offer to get his racquet restrung! If she does hot yoga, get her a yoga towel and a pair of grippy socks. One of the best gifts I received last year from the boy was a pair of spin shoes for my weekly spin class. If you buy the Boston ClassPass trial recommended above, you might also spring for some new workout tops as additional gifts along the same theme.

I haven't ordered the gift yet, but this year, my guy may be getting some new gear to support his snowboarding habit. These types of gifts are easy, yet come across as very thoughtful, and you know they will be used!

Accessories for favorite pastimes
always make great gifts.

4. The gift that keeps on giving: A monthly subscription service.

No, I'm not talking about magazines here! Birchbox, Blue Apron, and Craft Coffee are some of the best in the monthly-subscription scene (read more hereand have a few options for gifting. Blacksocks, the luxury socks mentioned above, also offers a subscription service. Every month (or more frequently), a box will ship in the mail full of new fun items.

In a future blogpost, I'll review my experience with Blue Apron (spoiler: It's been awesome).

Also, another coffee subscription company, Mistobox is doing a fun Valentine's Day promotion right now: $5 for a 2-oz Valentine Coffee-Gram. I may have already purchased one for my guy...

Craft Coffee, sent straight to his door, every month.

So what are you getting for your guy/girl this year? What was the best/most well-received gift you ever gave? Let me know in the comments!

P.S. A quick note on gift wrapping. This tip was pretty life-changing for me, but you may not need the help. The paper on the sides of the item should be shorter than the height of the package. You can get much crisper folds if you have less paper to deal with.

The Perfect Party

When your mom turns 60, you have to plan the perfect party. 6-0 is a big one, so you have to do the birthday right.

We opted not to go the surprise party route this time around. Surprise parties can be a lot of fun, but it's also fun when the birthday boy/girl gets to help plan their own party (and dictates the guest list).

Mom decided that she wanted a party that was a potluck, BYOB, and had music for dancing. Her friend graciously offered her home as the venue and party planning was on.

It's actually pretty easy to plan a party with a little effort, even if you aren't a professional party planner. Just follow these tips:

1. Pick a color scheme. And stick to it.

This is the most important for making the party feel like it was planned by a professional. A color scheme brings everything together in a very clean and polished way. We ended up going with black, red, and gold for a classy and sophisticated winter look. Everything we did -- from tablecloths to party favors and decorations -- was in this scheme. It's also much easier to delegate tasks to others if they know the colors they should look for (and don't be afraid to turn down blue plates if they are outside of the color scheme!).

2. Send invitations and reminders.

No need to send paper invitations in this day and age (although snail mail is always very well received). I used Paperless Post to create a digital invitation in our color scheme and sent out the first invitation about a month in advance. Paperless Post is great -- they provide templates for customizing invitations and tools for tracking rsvps and for sending follow ups and day-of reminders (super handy in the event of inclement weather, like we had!). And the absolute best part: it's free!

When sending an invite remember to include the essential details:
[who/what] - party for Mom!
[where] - location
[when] - date and time
[why] - why does this matter?
[how] - what else do guests need to know (e.g. how to get there, how to celebrate)

Invitations created and sent via Paperless Post

3. Provide some food and drinks, even if it's BYO.

If you plan the party at a restaurant, even if everyone is paying for him/herself, it's always nice to pre-order and pay for some appetizers for the group (flat breads, nachos, etc).

In our case, everyone was responsible for bringing their own (NO HEAT, NO MESS) dish, but I wanted to bring in some re-reinforcements to round things out. I emailed our local burrito place, Anna's Taqueria, a few days in advance, and for $100 they were able to hook us up with all the fixings for a taco bar. National chains like Chipotle and Qdoba offer similar catering options.

We also stocked up on wine and beer from our local Trader Joe's. The friendly staff at TJ's were able to recommend some good varietals for wine drinkers of all types without breaking the bank. And the surprising hit of the evening (also purchased at Trader Joe's) was Lindemans Framboise, a raspberry lambic beer that tastes more like a smoothie than a beer.

4. Make or bring a delicious dessert.

One of my New Years Resolutions was to make things I pin on Pinterest. Mom's 60th birthday seemed like a great opportunity to put this resolution into action.

I tried these awesome no-bake Oreo truffles recently at a friend's engagement party and decided to give the recipe a spin. These bad boys only have 3 ingredients (oreos, cream cheese, chocolate chips) so they are pretty straightforward for even the most novice chef. Definitely a hit with the party goers!

Relatively easy and delicious Oreo truffles

If it's a birthday, you'll also need some cake or cupcakes and candles for birthday wishes. Costco is always a good bet for an affordable and delicious cake, but your local grocery store's bakery also has you covered, just give them a couple days' notice.

5. Step up the fun.

A relatively cheap and easy way to step up the fun for any sort of party (and often overlooked) is to bring in helium filled balloons -- in your color scheme, of course!

I ordered 18 balloons from our local Party City for around $25 total. Nothing says PARTY! quite like a good bunch of balloons. I called the store the morning of the party and they had no problem filling the order by my desired pick-up time (although you may want to check a few days in advance to make sure they won't be backed up). 18 balloons is about the max I would recommend for fitting in the back seat of a typical sedan, so plan accordingly (or see if the party store can deliver if you want more than that).

So there you have it -- all the ingredients for a successful party! Do you have any tips you use for party planning? If yes, leave them in the comments.

New England Cozy

New England-ers know what to expect in January. Cold, snow, and ice. We complain about it, although we secretly love it. I suspect that shoveling out one's car is an unspoken rite of passage around here. It briefly unifies neighbors who typically fight over the same parking spots.

This winter hasn't been particularly snowy so far, but it has been incredibly cold. Really cold. Like zero degrees Fahrenheit cold, and schools in Boston were closed earlier this week, which means that getting comfy and cozy indoors is a must.

Cellphone screen capture from a
very chilly 0
°F earlier this week

Growing up, falling temperatures didn't mean the heat was turned up higher. Instead, it was time to layer up and put on a(nother) sweatshirt. In my adult life, I have more control of the thermostat, and no longer need to stack hoodies, but I still opt to throw on my favorite sweats when lounging around.

*My Fave Four* for getting cozy:

1. LLBean Womens Wicked Good® Moccasins: LLBean is a New England staple, and for a good reason. Their products are made for the cold. These mocs are without a doubt the best slippers. All of my friends have a pair. Size down, as they stretch a bit as you break them in.

2. Patagonia Better Sweater®: I didn't understand the Better Sweater hype until I got one of my own. I basically live in this thing at home. Since it's slim fit, I sized up to a women's large (I'm normally between a medium and a large) and it fits great. Perfect for layering.

3. Lululemon Base Runner Pant: I love these pants. They are the softest pants I own and incredibly comfortable. I also adore the pockets. I use them primarily as sleep pants, but they are versatile enough that I wouldn't hesitate to wear them around town while running errands.

4. SFERRA Celine throw: This beautiful gift arrived from my boyfriend expertly wrapped during the holidays. I was blown away by the presentation. It looks and feels much more expensive than it is and is the perfect size for cuddling up on the couch.

What is your favorite winter cozy item? Let me know in the comments below.

Resolutions

Five Resolutions for 2015:

  1. Start my blog (Done!).
  2. Save more money (Planning to get financially savvy with these great tips from LearnVest)
  3. Run a 5k (Maybe this one in July? See more races on active.com)
  4. Actually cook the food I pin (See my extensive list of food pins here)
  5. Aim to arrive early (Setting my alarm an hour earlier tomorrow... wish me luck!)

Every year I make resolutions, but this is the year I will actually make them count.

*Welcome to everily*

While this blog is still a work in progress and the content is very much still up in the air, this blog should resonate with 20-30 somethings who are looking for a lifestyle blog from someone real. I'm a young urban professional, living in the city of Boston, and trying to chart my path in the real world. The road won't always be even, and the advice won't be perfect, but that's life. I'm looking forward to starting this adventure together!
